WELCOME ICEBREAKER

What was your highlight at church this weekend?

WORSHIP

Psalm 8
O LORD, our Lord, the majesty of your name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.
You have taught children and nursing infants to give you praise.
They silence your enemies who were seeking revenge.
When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
the moon and the stars you have set in place—
what are mortals that you should think of us, mere humans that you should care for us?

WORD

This week’s home group is on spiritual parenting. This may not be applicable for groups meeting over the lunch hour in the business setting or for home groups with no parents. If you feel the discussion would be limited on this topic feel free to use the Proverb of the day.

Read Proverbs 22:6

Opening question: What challenges do you think Canadian parents face raising children today that they did not face 100 years ago?

Read Deuteronomy 6:6-7

  • How do we write God’s word on our hearts?
  • What are some creative ways to teach children God’s word?
  • Did you have parents growing up who modeled living God’s word for you? If not who has been an example to you?
  • How are you presently teaching God’s word to your children?

Read Luke 11:1

The disciples came and asked Jesus to teach them to pray. They could of asked Him to teach them on a number of topics but this one was the key to success in other areas. The fact they asked to be taught tells us that we need to be schooled in prayer.

  • Who taught you to pray?
  • What was the first prayer you prayed?
  • How do you think a parent can teach their child to pray?
  • What basic instruction on prayer do you think a child should know? The Lord’s Prayer in the following verses gives us some basics.
  • How are you presently teaching your children to pray?

Read Leviticus 19:32-34

  • What rules of respect where you taught when you where growing up?
  • These verses talk about respecting the elderly and the immigrant. What else do young people need to be taught to respect?
  • Where do you think respect is lacking in our young people?
  • In what area do you think your children need to learn respect?

Read Proverbs 12:22; Proverbs 11:1; Colossians 3:9; Leviticus 19:11

  • How did your parents teach you to tell the truth?
  • What are the consequences if a child does not get this training early in life?
  • Do you think the school you went to had the same values that you were taught at home?
