WORSHIP

This lesson is on focus and worship is all about focus. It is a time when we, in unity, put aside other thoughts that would distract us and think only about the Lord and His goodness. This prepares us to have His word become alive in us as we discuss it.

WORD

Read Hebrews 12:1-3
In these verses we are instructed to fix our eyes on Jesus. It is written in the context of a runner who in a race has a keen focus. If the focus of the runner is distracted, he is likely to stumble or lose the race.

  • What does it mean to fix your eyes on Jesus?
  • What distracts you from keeping your eyes on Jesus?
  • What have you discovered that helps you keep your eyes on Jesus?
  • What are the weights that the writer is referring to?

Read 1 Cor. 11:1

  • Here Paul tells the Corinthians to imitate him as he imitates Christ. If, what he did, didn’t follow Christ, they were not to copy him. As group discuss why it is important to keep your eyes on Jesus and not another person no matter how saintly they are.

Read Matthew 14:22-23

  • What made Peter sink?
    • He lost his confidence in himself
    • He shifted his focus to the circumstances
    • His fear was greater than his faith
    • He thought it was foolish to be out of the safety of the boat.
  • Where was the focus of Jesus? How does that relate to His focus today?
  • What are the circumstances in your life today that are trying to steal your focus on Jesus?
  • Share a time when Jesus has lifted you back up after you took your eyes off of Him.
