The Rewards of Serving Print

WELCOME ICEBREAKER

If there was a “Mother Teresa Award” for unselfish and tireless servanthood in your family or in our church, who would you nominate?

WORSHIP

I will thank you, LORD, with all my heart;
I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done.
I will be filled with joy because of you.
I will sing praises to your name, O Most High.

Psalm 9:1-2

WORD

As a group read John 13:1-17.

In the last hours of His life Jesus gave us an incredible example of serving. He was hours away from His death, yet He loved His disciples to the end. The example wasn’t that we are to literally to wash each other’s feet but to serve others at a personal sacrifice, to humble ourselves and meet a need when it is not “our job” to do it.

Discuss the following questions making sure everyone has a chance to participate.

  • Why didn’t the disciples wash their feet before supper?
  • Why didn’t one of the other disciples get up and meet an obvious need in the room?
  • Why did Jesus want to wash the disciples’ feet?
  • What would you do if Jesus wanted to wash your feet?
  • How could you better display a servant attitude at your job or at your school?

It says that Jesus rose from supper to wash the disciples’ feet. In doing so, He left His “comfort zone”. We too have to leave our comfort zone to go and serve others. What are some examples of leaving our comfort zone to serve others?

It says He laid aside His garments in order to serve others. We too have to lay things aside to serve others. What are some examples of things we may have to lay aside to serve others in the church, our family or at the work place?

Jesus even washed the feet of Judas, the one who would betray Him in a few hours. What do we learn from this lesson and how can we apply it?

Finally from verse 17, what is the reward of serving that Jesus mentions?

WORK

As we discussed at our leadership summit, caring for members of the group is a key component of a healthy home group. Ask for prayer requests and look for tangible ways your group can care for one another this week.
