Stewarding God's Resources |
|
WELCOME ICEBREAKER Who comes to your mind when you think of someone who is generous with possessions and money? WORSHIP Psalm 148 WORD Please note that there are over 2,300 verses in the Bible that deal with possessions and money. It is, therefore, possible to “cherry-pick” the verses we like and build a theology to our liking. There is a poverty ditch (money is a curse) and a prosperity ditch (money is my right) but in the middle there is stewardship (money is a privilege — everything I have belongs to God). Let’s approach this study from the stewardship position. Read 1 Timothy 6:10 - According to this verse what is the root of all evil?
Read 1 Timothy 6:17-19 - How does this instruction from Paul to Timothy apply to us today?
Read Luke 12:13-21 - Advertising is dedicated to making us believe the opposite of verse 15. What differences in lifestyle result from believing Jesus versus advertisements?
- After dying, how would the local paper describe this rich man in the obituaries?
- How would you rate this man’s stewardship of what God entrusted to him?
- How many “I”s can you count in this parable? How does the security of resting in God’s love affect our giving?
- How would you describe the rich man in this parable?
- A show-off
- Brilliant
- Content
- Unhappy
- Selfish
- Other
- Why was God’s response to the rich man so harsh?
- What changes would be required for you to be rich toward God?
- Why do we need the wealthy people in the world?
See Deuteronomy 8:18 and Matthew 27:57 for verses to start the discussion. You may want to add other verses. WORK Take time to pray for the needs of the group. Please pray that God will give us direction as we work on the building renovation plans. Pray for the water baptism candidates that they would continue to grow in God and be planted in the church. Pray for your home group to multiply. Has this lesson helped you? Please let us know! Email home group testimonies with this form! Always remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you power to become rich, and he does it to fulfill the covenant he made with your ancestors. Deuteronomy 8:18 — NLT
