WORD

Joseph had a dream. He did not make it up or imagine it. It was a God given dream of whom he would be.

The first coat that Joseph wears is the COAT OF HUMAN AFFECTION. God would not let him build his dream on the affection of his father. In chapter 37 we see he is stripped of this coat. Sooner of later if we want to accomplish all God has for us we have to be stripped of living off the affection of man.

Read Genesis chapter 37 about the dream that God gave Joseph.

  • Why did God give these dreams to Joseph at this time?
  • What do you think was going through Joseph’s mind when his brothers put him in the pit? See also Genesis 42: 21.
  • Who should we live to please? Read Colossian 3: 22, 23, Galatians 1:10, Philippians 4: 5, 1 Thessalonians 2:4, Ephesians 6: 6

The second coat that Joseph would have to lose is the COAT OF HUMAN ACHIEVEMENT. Read Genesis 39. God certainly blessed all that Joseph did under Potiphar, however God was not finished grooming Joseph for all that was ahead of him. We see in this chapter the purity of a man who follows his God and the vision for his life. In a brief moment all that he has achieved is stripped from him.

  • What tactics did Potiphar’s wife use to tempt Joseph?
  • How did Joseph manage to dodge the snare that has captured many great men - immoral sex? See also: 2 Timothy 2: 22, Proverbs 22: 3.
  • How did it feel for Joseph to go from the prison to the palace?
  • “Right now my life is most like Joseph when he …

    1. … didn’t know where he was going.”
    2. … was mistreated by others.”
    3. … was imprisoned in a bad situation.”
    4. … made the most of his suffering.”
    5. … felt he was forgotten by God.”

The third coat that we see him wearing is one that no one could ever take from him, not his family, not his enemies, not even a king - THE COAT OF DESTINY. Read Genesis 41: 37-45. He ultimately would wear a garment from the king of Egypt, he would be the second most powerful man in the then known world. This coat of destiny did not come from his dad, nor from his boss but from his God. God has given each one of us a destiny, a divine purpose in life.

  • What quality in Joseph’s life stands out the most in this story?

    1. Patience
    2. Intimacy with God
    3. Humility
    4. Diplomacy
    5. Wisdom
    6. Faithfulness
    7. Other
  • Have you ever suffered for something that wasn’t your fault? How did God make things right?
