WELCOME ICEBREAKER

The church in Philippi was not doubt excited to receive a letter from Paul. What mail do you open first: bills, official looking mail, personal, hand addressed?

WORSHIP

Worship is an attitude. It is important to make the choice of worshipping in our home groups. Notice the progression of worship in Psalm 34:1-3.

I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my
mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the LORD; the humble shall hear of it
and be glad. Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt His name
together.
Note the three-fold process of praise:  praise begins with our will (prime the pump), praise flows to out emotions and then praise spreads to others.

WORD

Have the group read Philippians chapter 2.

Discussion questions:

  1. What verse stands out to you in this part of the letter?
  2. How would you describe the attitude of Jesus as seen in verses 6 to 11?
  3. How does what Paul write challenge the message we hear from those in the world of marketing?
  4. How would you describe humility?
  5. What do you think it means to WORK OUT your salvation? Note the fear and trembling referred to here is not that which paralyzes but which causes us to seek God's help in humility, aware of our own inadequacy.
  6. Of the various expressions of attitude that Paul refers to here (humility, servant hood, taking responsibility for ourselves and others, not complaining, avoiding selfish ambition or conceit, unity) which one do you have to work on the most?
  7. Why is grumbling such a serious concern for Paul?
  8. How do Timothy and Epaphroditus illustrate 2:1-4?
  9. What qualification of Timothy qualifies him for the responsibility Paul gives him?

WORK

Paul asked for the prayers of the people as he was in a difficult situation.
Pray for those in your group who may be facing challenges and their attitude is being tested.
