- When you pray, not if you pray.
Matthew 6:5 And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites ... Matthew 6:6 But you, when you pray, go into your room ... Matthew 6:7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions ...
1 Thessalonians Pray without ceasing.
Luke 11:1 Once when Jesus had been out praying, one of His disciples came to Him as He finished and said, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught His disciples." - Pray to please God not to impress others.
Matthew 6:5 And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
- Hypocrisy is from a Greek word meaning to put on a theatrical act.
- Pray in secret.
Matthew 6:6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
- Jesus regularly went to the Garden of Gethsemane or to the Mount of Olives to pray. (Luke 22:39)
- Are you looking for God? You will find the Father in the secret place.
- There is a magnet inside us drawing us to pray.
- "The itch in your spirit cannot be satisfied by scratching your soul." - Judson Cornwall.
- Shut the door to distractions.
Luke 10:40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me."
- Keep it real.
Matthew 6:7 (Message Bible) The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They're full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God.
- Pray with humility.
- Don't make prayer a formula.
- Pray from your heart.
John 4:24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.
- Pray expecting.
Matthew 6:8 Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.
Mark 11:24 That's why I tell you to have faith that you have already received whatever you pray for, and it will be yours.
