Changing Lanes Print

Pastor David Koop

In order to make it count in 2008 we will have to pursue wisdom and that will require us to make some changes.

Listen now

Make it count.

Ecclesiastes 10:10
If the ax is dull, and one does not sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength; but wisdom brings success.
Ephesians 5:15

So be careful how you live, not as fools but as those who are wise.

Get wisdom.
Proverbs 4:7a
Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do!

Wisdom requires making a choice to change lanes.
John 5:6
When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”

Recognize you need to make a lane change.
John 5:14
A little later Jesus found him in the Temple and said, “You look wonderful! You’re well! Don’t return to a sinning life or something worse might happen.
Proverbs 28:13
He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.
Psalm 38:4
For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
Psalm 38:10
My heart pants, my strength fails me; as for the light of my eyes, it also has gone from me.
Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Jude 24
Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,

Move into the lane of humility.
Matthew 18:3
Then he said to them, “I can guarantee this truth: Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Proverbs 11:2
Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Move into the lane of wise friends.
John 5:14
Afterward Jesus found him in the temple …
Proverbs 13:20
Become wise by walking with the wise; hang out with fools and watch your life fall to pieces.

Move into the lane of self-control. For example:

  • In what we eat and drink:
    Proverbs 20:1
Wine produces mockers; liquor leads to brawls. Whoever is led astray by drink cannot be wise.
    Proverbs 23:20,21
Do not carouse with drunkards and gluttons, for they are on their way to poverty. Too much sleep clothes a person with rags.

  • In our emotions:
    Proverbs 29:11
A fool gives full vent to anger, but a wise person quietly holds it back.

  • In our words:
    Proverbs 16:23
From a wise mind comes wise speech; the words of the wise are persuasive.
    Proverbs 10:19
Don’t talk too much, for it fosters sin. Be sensible and turn off the flow!
    Proverbs 12:18
Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.

  • In our sex life:
    Proverbs 6:32
But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool, for he destroys his own soul.

  • In our finances:
    Proverbs 21:20
The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.
    Proverbs 10:4
He who has a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

Move into the lane of being teachable. (Proerbs 9:9, 13:10, 19:20, 21:11, 24:6)
Proverbs 12:15
Fools are headstrong and do what they like; wise people take advice.

Move into the lane of God’s presence.
Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.
Colossians 1:13
He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,

Think about it:

  1. What area of your life do you need to make a lane change?
  2. Besides those mentioned here, what are other examples of lane changes do we need to make?
  3. Why are people slow to make changes?
  4. If a person moves into the lane of wisdom how will their life change?
  5. What people or sources do you turn to when you have to make changes in your life?
  6. Why did Jesus ask the man in John 5 :”Do you want to be well?”
  7. What did Jesus mean when he told him to stop sinning?
  8. How did the sick man exercise wisdom?
