Fishers of Men Print

The book of Mark begins with Jesus challenging a few blue collar fishermen to follow Him, and ends with them following a command to go and tell the world His message. This challenge and command goes out to us today.

Listen now

What is the challenge they received?

Mark 1:16,18
And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

Let’s note:

  1. Jesus interrupts our busy lives and calls us where we are.
  2. Jesus initiates the conversation.
  3. The challenge to follow Him is our choice.
  4. To follow we must surrender. They put His call above their work and family.
  5. It is in the following that Jesus makes us great.
  6. What got them hooked on Jesus? Some thoughts:
    1. His divine authority.
    2. The goodness and love of Jesus.
    3. It was not forced on them.
    4. Companionship or the “be with” factor.
    5. Opportunity to do something bigger with their lives.

What is the command they received?

Mark 16:15  (Message Bible)
Then he said, “Go into the world. Go everywhere and announce the Message of God’s good news to one and all.”

  1. Two conditions can prevent us from going:
    Mark 16:14
Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.

  2. The Lord will go with us and confirm His word through accompanying signs.
    Mark 16:20
And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.
