Fishers of Men |
|
|
The book of Mark begins with Jesus challenging a few blue collar fishermen to follow Him, and ends with them following a command to go and tell the world His message. This challenge and command goes out to us today. Listen now
What is the challenge they received? Mark 1:16,18 And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him. Let’s note: - Jesus interrupts our busy lives and calls us where we are.
- Jesus initiates the conversation.
- The challenge to follow Him is our choice.
- To follow we must surrender. They put His call above their work and family.
- It is in the following that Jesus makes us great.
- What got them hooked on Jesus? Some thoughts:
- His divine authority.
- The goodness and love of Jesus.
- It was not forced on them.
- Companionship or the “be with” factor.
- Opportunity to do something bigger with their lives.
What is the command they received? Mark 16:15 (Message Bible) Then he said, “Go into the world. Go everywhere and announce the Message of God’s good news to one and all.” - Two conditions can prevent us from going:
Mark 16:14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.
- The Lord will go with us and confirm His word through accompanying signs.
Mark 16:20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen. |
