WORSHIP

Psalm 57

WORD

In the life of David we see he was chosen by God to be king. After Samuel anointed him the door opened up for him to play for King Saul. He went in a short time from shepherd to being next to the king’s office; soon after he wins a decisive battle for the nation against the Philistines. Then the jealousy of King Saul causes David to flee. It appears like circumstances are now pulling him away from his destiny (1 Samuel 27:1). Instead of getting closer, the distance to the throne is further away than ever. David is in the slingshot of opportunity. David’s example of what he did gives us a pattern to follow when we are in the slingshot.

As a group read the following verses and discuss how they might apply to our lives:

  • David behaved wisely. (1 Samuel 18:5,14,15,30)
  • Stay in touch with others. (1 Samuel 18:16)
  • Continue to worship God. As a group read Psalm 57 which David wrote during this season. Where do you see an abrupt change in mood in this psalm? What do you think happened?
  • Embrace your family and others who support you, even if they are a diamond in the rough. (1 Samuel 22:1-2)
  • Read 1 Samuel 30:1-8. What can you learn from David here when he is pulled back in the slingshot? How did he respond? What do you think he learned from his time with the Philistines?
