WORSHIP

Psalm 103:1-5

WORD

David demonstrated character and greatness in his life long before he was chosen to be king. We read in 1 Samuel 16:11 that he was “keeping the sheep”. In this story we see that David was faithful, committed and obedient to his father long before this opportunity came to him. Greatness is not a one time event: We see David slay the giant and we think that was when he became great, but greatness is not doing one great thing in a big way, but in doing every little thing in a great way.

As a group read 1 Samuel 16:6-13

  • How do you think the brothers and Jesse felt when none of the seven oldest boys were chosen?
  • How do you feel David felt when he was called in from keeping the sheep?
  • What did God see in David’s heart?
  • What can we learn from this when we have to place someone into a position? How do you see the condition of the heart?
  • How can you apply the principle of being a faithful keeper in your life?

David’s right relationship with God and character empowered him to win many battles in life and walk out of some deep valleys in life. In the Psalms he talks much about righteousness. From his youth his trust in God was the key to his victories. Like many of us David grew up with others putting limitations on his life, but not God, he empowered David.

  • What limitation do you see his dad putting on him in 1 Samuel 16:4-12?
  • What limitation did his brothers put on him in 1 Samuel 17:17-29?
  • What limitation did the King put on David in 1 Samuel 17:33?

As a group discuss what it is like when our parents or those close to us put limitations on us.

  • What limitations have others put on you? Who was there in your life that overlooked you or said you couldn’t make it? How did you respond?
  • How did David respond to those putting limits on him?
