Parent & Child Dedication

But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.”

– Matthew 19:14 (NLT)

What is Child Dedication?

The purpose of child dedication is to publicly proclaim that the parents desire to uphold God’s Word in the home and their responsibility as parents is to be in agreement with God’s Word. At the child dedication the parents are exhorted to “train up their child in the way they should go”. The prayer of blessing prayed over the child and parents is to provide a spiritual covering to maintain and promote the family unit as God planned it to be.

Is child dedication the same as child baptism?

Child dedication at Coastal Church is not the same as child baptism. We understand that some churches practice “baptism of confirmation” for children. This ceremony is intended to be a commitment between the parents and God on the behalf of the child. The parents promise to raise their child in the faith until the child is old enough to make his or her own personal confession of Christ. This custom began about 300 years after the Bible was completed and is different from the biblical examples of new believers being baptized to publicly profess their faith in Jesus.
