QUESTIONS:

  • When you think about serving others and doing a lowly task, what usually holds people back? Is it time, pride, fear, or something else?

When Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, His purpose wasn’t just to solve a problem. He was teaching a lesson: true greatness is found in serving.

    1. Servants serve even in times of personal need.
Jesus knew the cross was just hours away. Yet instead of focusing on Himself, He focused on His disciples. On the cross, He cared for His mother. Even while suffering, He extended mercy to the thief beside Him. Jesus shows us: serving isn’t about convenience—it’s about love.
    2. Servants are secure in their identity.
John 13:3 says, “Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that He had come from God and was returning to God.” Because Jesus knew who He was, He could stoop to the lowest place. Insecure people avoid lowly tasks because they think it makes them “less.” But Jesus shows us that secure people are free to serve—even their enemies.
    3. We are called to copy His example.
After washing their feet, Jesus asked, “Do you understand what I have done for you?” Serving is not just about getting something—it’s about becoming something. To know Christ is to become like Christ, and that means becoming a servant.

  • What does serving others, or not serving others, reveal about our hearts?

Serving doesn’t just reveal something about us, it actually shapes us. Serving isn’t just for others it transforms us too. Here are 3 ways:

    1. Serving centers you in God’s will.
God’s plan for you always involves giving yourself away. Jesus said in Matthew 20:26–28, “Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant … for even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
    2. Serving unlocks your God-given potential.
1 Corinthians 12:7 says, “A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.” Your gifts are not just for you—they are activated when you use them to serve others.
    3. Serving brings joy and blessing.
Jesus said in John 13:17, “Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” Joy isn’t found in talking about serving—it’s found in actually serving. Hebrews 12:2 reminds us that even Jesus endured the cross because of the joy set before Him. Serving is the path to joy.

  • What is one practical way you could serve someone this week, at home, at work, or in your community?
  • Take a moment to reflect on a few verses together by have someone in the group read the verse and share what the verse means to them.

    1. Galatians 5:13
    2. Philippians 2:3–4
    3. Matthew 20:26–28
    4. Colossians 3:23–24
    5. Proverbs 11:25
KEY VERSES:

Galatians 5:13
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love.

Philippians 2:3-4
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Matthew 20:26-28
Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Colossians 3:23-24
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Proverbs 11:25
A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

CLOSING PRAYER:
“Lord, thank You for modelling and teaching us to serve. Help us to be secure in who we are in You, free to serve without hesitation. Open our eyes to needs around us, and give us the courage to act. May our service bring You honor and draw others closer to Jesus. Amen.”
