What Did Daniel’s Parents Do Right?

How to Raise Kids with an Unshakable Identity in Christ

If you’re searching for how to build an “unshakable identity” in a world that keeps trying to rename, retrain, and reshape you, Daniel’s story feels incredibly relevant today. Daniel was just a teenager, about sixteen, when he was ripped from everything familiar and dropped into the most powerful empire at the time – Babylon. Babylon didn’t just conquer other nations; its goal was to assimilate people completely, erasing their original culture, beliefs and identity. Yet Daniel and his three friends – Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah – held firmly to their faith in God.

So the question is: what did Daniel’s parents do right? And how can that same foundation give our kids an unshakable identity today?

Let’s be honest, this question matters deeply. As parents, we’re raising children in a culture that constantly redefines truth, blurs right and wrong, and pressures our youth to conform. The fear is real: what if our kids lose their identity as followers of Christ? But Daniel’s story (and the quiet faithfulness of his parents) shows us it doesn’t have to end that way. These young men didn’t just survive Babylon—they thrived in it while staying faithful to the God of their forefathers. The Bible gives us a window into the foundation their parents built at home, and that foundation is exactly what we need right now.

A Firm Foundation Starts at Home

Scripture makes it clear that God’s favor was on these young men. But favor doesn’t replace a spiritual foundation, it builds on it.

Someone taught them.
Someone modeled faith.
Someone showed them what it looked like to live for God.

I believe their parents did something right and the spiritual foundation laid in their early years became the anchor that held them steady in a foreign and hostile culture.

The Bible gives us a clue into what their parents did right. Just take a look at the significance of their names:

  • Daniel –  “God is my Judge”
  • Hananiah – “The Lord is gracious”
  • Mishael – “Who is like the Lord?”
  • Azariah – “The Lord is my helper”

These names were daily reminders of who these boys belonged to and the hope their parents carried: that their lives would be lived for God’s glory. Then Babylon struck. One of the first things the king did to these young captives was change their names. It was a deliberate attack to redefine who they were. But their original names (and the truth they carried) stuck in their hearts. When the pressure hit, Daniel didn’t cave. The Bible says in Daniel 1:8, “But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine.” This word resolved carries weight. It conveys determination, persistence, and the grit to never forget where he came from and who he belonged to. I firmly believe that resolve came from the spiritual foundation his parents had built at home.

And that foundation stood firm. Not only did these four young men refuse the king’s delicacies (choosing a simple diet that honored God), but later, when false accusations sent Daniel into the lions’ den and his friends into the fiery furnace, their identity in God was so secure that the Lord rescued them both times! Their circumstances had changed, but their identity didn’t. Even when facing death, they trusted God completely. And God was faithful, giving them influence that impacted an entire nation for the glory of God.

Faith That Lasts a Lifetime

The enemy’s strategy hasn’t changed: he still tries to steal, kill, and destroy our identity as children of God. Whether it’s the pressure to find worth in social media, confusion around Biblical truth and values, or cultural messages that contradict God’s Word – it’s clear our Christian identity is under attack. If our identity isn’t grounded in Christ, it will be shaped by culture. But I believe we can raise children who have an unshakeable identity in Christ if we are resolved as parents to build a spiritual foundation in the home.

Building that kind of foundation doesn’t happen accidentally—it happens intentionally.

I’ve seen a powerful example of this in the life of Pastor David Trivino, our Commercial Spanish Pastor. He was raised in a Christian home in Machala, Ecuador. As the eldest of four siblings – all of whom are all faithfully serving the Lord today – I asked him about his upbringing and how his parents, Ipertis and Carmen, successfully raised four children to honour God through their teenage years. This was his response:

Pray

Pastor David’s parents set aside dedicated time to pray with their children every day and they taught their kids to pray for each other. Prayer wasn’t occasional; it was the rhythm of their home.

Read

Ipertis and Carmen consistently read and discussed the Word of God with their children. This helped shape how they thought and gave them God’s perspective on life.

Serve

They served together as a family, making church not just a place they attended, but a life they lived.

Lead

Pastor David’s parents lived out their faith authentically. Their kids didn’t just hear about God – they saw Him reflected in their parents’ lives even in hard times.

That combination – prayer, service, authentic leadership and a deep understanding of God’s Word – produced the same kind of resolve we see in Daniel. It’s exactly what Romans 12:2 calls us to: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Daniel’s parents helped renew their sons’ minds with God’s truth long before the tests came. And we can do the same.

What This Looks Like for Us Today

The world may be shaking, but our identity doesn’t have to. Our identity isn’t formed by government policies, school systems, or cultural trends. Our identity is found in Christ. In Him we are chosen, adopted, forgiven, secure, loved, and overcomers. Empires rise and fall, but God never changes. And just as He was with Daniel and his friends, He is with us – and with our children – today.

So let’s put into practice what we learned from the life of Daniel.

Parents

Start building a spiritual foundation while your kids are still at home. Talk about who God is. Pray with them. Read and discuss the Bible together so they know God’s perspective. Remind them daily of their identity in Christ. A great resource is the set of affirmations we have for men, women, and children on our church website. Use this as a tool to reinforce your identity in Christ daily. (Download the Coastal Church App to find the Daily Cofessions.)

Young People

Resolve in your heart to live for Christ! Continue to build a firm foundation by coming to church, joining one of our kids or youth life groups, and choosing friends who build up your faith! You can live as a young person who stands firm no matter what’s happening around you.

An unshakable identity doesn’t happen by accident—it’s built on truth, reinforced over time, and chosen daily. So when the world tries to rename, retrain, and reshape us, we must remember who we are – children of God! Because when our foundation is rooted in Christ, it cannot be shaken.
