What It Means to Be a Child of God

Have you ever walked into a room and wondered, Do I really belong here? Maybe you’ve felt like the outsider, the forgotten one, or the person who doesn’t quite fit. For some of us, those feelings go deeper. Experiences with family, rejection, or disappointment can leave us wondering whether we are truly wanted, loved, or accepted.

We all have a deep desire to belong. We want to know that we matter, that someone sees us, and that we have a place. We want to be loved not because of what we can accomplish, but simply because of who we are.

The good news of the Gospel is that God doesn’t just offer us forgiveness. He offers us a family. Through Jesus, we are not simply servants or followers. He calls us His children! 

The apostle Paul explains this beautiful truth in Galatians 4, where he reminds us that because of Jesus, we have been adopted into God’s family, given a new identity, and welcomed into a relationship with God as our Father. 

So, what does it really mean to be a child of God and how can knowing that we belong to Him change the way we live?

You Are Not a Slave – You Are a Child

In Galatians 4, Paul uses the picture of a child who is an heir but, while still underage, is placed under guardians and trustees until the time appointed by the father. Paul uses this picture to describe what life was like before Christ. We were enslaved under sin and unable to experience the freedom and relationship with God that He intended for us.

But then everything changed.

“But then the chosen time came. God sent his Son. A woman gave birth to him. He was born under the authority of the law. He came to set free those who were under the authority of the law. He wanted us to be adopted as children with all the rights children have.” (Galatians 4:4-5)

God sent Jesus to redeem us so that we could become His children. God didn’t simply rescue us from something. He brought us into something. He brought us into His family.

In the Roman world, adoption was a significant legal act. An adopted son received the full rights of a biological son, including the right to an inheritance. There was no second-class status. Once adopted, you belonged.

Paul uses this powerful picture to help us understand what God has done through Jesus. Our adoption into God’s family is a complete identity transformation.

Before Christ, we were separated from God by sin.
Through Christ, we are brought near.

Before, we were slaves.
Now, we are children.

Before, we were outsiders.
Now, we belong.

Before, we had no inheritance.
Now, we are heirs.

God Gives Us a New Identity

And Paul makes it even more personal: 

“Because you are his children, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. He is the Holy Spirit. By his power we call God Abba. Abba means Father. So you aren’t a slave any longer. You are God’s child. Because you are his child, God gives you the rights of those who are his children.” (Galatians 4:6-7)

The word “Abba” is an intimate term for father, similar to “Daddy” or “Papa.” Think about that. The God who created the universe invites you to call Him Father. Your identity is no longer determined by your past, your family history, your failures, your accomplishments, or what other people think about you. Your identity begins with what God says about you. 

You are His child. 

You are not unwanted. 
You are not forgotten. 
You are not alone. 

You belong to God.

When Family Has Hurt You

For some people, calling God “Father” can be difficult. Maybe you had a loving relationship with your father. Maybe you didn’t. Maybe your family was a safe place. Maybe home was complicated. Some people grew up hearing “I love you” regularly. Others spent years wishing they had heard it more often.

Our earthly families are imperfect. Even loving parents can fail us. Some people carry wounds from abandonment, rejection, neglect, or broken relationships that continue to affect how they see themselves. Sometimes, without realizing it, we can project those experiences onto God.

If my earthly father wasn’t there for me, maybe God won’t be either.
If I had to earn love growing up, maybe I have to earn God’s love too.
If I was rejected before, maybe God will eventually reject me.

But the Gospel tells us something different. God is the perfect Father we all need. He doesn’t love you because you performed well. He doesn’t adopt you because you earned it. He doesn’t keep you because you never make mistakes. He loves you because you are His.

The Gospel isn’t simply the story of a God who forgives your sins and sends you on your way. It is the story of a Father who says: “Come home. You belong here.”

You Don’t Have to Earn Your Place

One of the greatest lies we can believe is that we have to earn our place in God’s family. Maybe you feel like you need to pray more, serve more, read your Bible more, stop making mistakes, or become a better Christian before God will truly accept you. Those are important parts of following Jesus, but they are not how we earn our identity. You don’t work to become God’s child. You live differently because you already are God’s child.

Think about the difference:

Trying to Earn Love	Living as a Child of God
“Am I doing enough?”	“I belong here.”
“I need to prove my value.”	“My Father already loves me.”
“I have to earn God’s approval.”	“I live from God’s approval”

God wants us to serve Him, obey Him, and follow Him—not because we’re trying to earn His love, but because we already have it. That changes everything.

You Belong to the Family of God

Being adopted by God also means becoming part of a new family – the family of God. The Christian life was never meant to be lived alone. When you come to Christ, you don’t just gain a relationship with God. You gain brothers and sisters in Christ. That is why church matters. That is why Christian community matters. That is why Life Groups matter.

We need people who will:

• Remind us who we are when we forget.
• Pray with us when we’re struggling.
• Celebrate with us when life is good.
• Point us back to Jesus when we start drifting.

And someone else needs you to do the same for them.
There is a place for you in the family of God. You don’t have to sit on the sidelines wondering if you belong. You belong here.

What Does This Look Like in Your Life?

If you are a follower of Jesus, begin living from your identity, not for your identity. 

• When you fail, remember: I am still God’s child.
• When you feel rejected, remember: I am still God’s child.
• When you feel alone, remember: I am not alone. My Father is with me.
• When you compare yourself to others, remember: I don’t have to compete for God’s love.
• When you’re tempted to prove your worth, remember: My worth is already secure in Christ.

You don’t have to wonder if you belong. In Christ, you have been adopted. You have a Father. You have a family. You have an inheritance. You have a place.

You Belong Here

Maybe today you need to make a decision. Maybe you’ve followed Jesus for years, but you’ve been living like an employee instead of a child – trying to earn God’s approval instead of resting in His love. Maybe you’ve experienced family wounds that have made it difficult to trust God as your heavenly Father. Or maybe you’ve never surrendered your life to Jesus and experienced what it means to become part of God’s family.

Wherever you are, the invitation is the same: Come home.
The Father is not standing at a distance waiting for you to become good enough. He is inviting you into relationship, love, belonging, and a new identity. 

Galatians 4 reminds us that through Jesus, we are no longer slaves. We are children of God and heirs. 

So lift your head. 

You are not unwanted. 
You are not forgotten. 
You are not alone. 

You are a child of God! 

And if God is your Father, then you have a place in His family. You belong here.
